For example, Vermont Telephone is using $116 million in grants and loans to bring broadband internet service to underserved homes and businesses. In addition, the Vermont Telecommunications Authority along with Sovernet Communications is using $33.4 million in federal funds to build a 773 mile fiber-optic line allowing schools, federal buildings and community centers to hook up to the main trunk.

It is important in many places to get the internet into the country as soon as possible. This is to keep any student from falling further and further behind. For example, some schools in Vermont must ask all other users of a T-1 line to get off when they want to take a video field trip or risk losing the connection entirely.
