Internet Service - Your First Month's Bill

When you see a promotion advertising the rates for Internet service so low, it's hard to resist the low pricing being offered. Before signing up for an offer there are some items you may find yourself paying for when you get your first monthly bill. As we all know, money is nothing that can be wasted these days.

Before we go into this article, I just want to let everyone know that this is not to bash any particular ISP or cause an discouragement from ordering Internet services. This is just an article designed to inform the public of additional expenses they may come across when signing up for Internet. It should be noted that many of these fees and expenses can be attributed to bundled Internet packages and not just a single high speed Internet connection.

One first expense not often put into consideration as common as it is would be the installation fee. Expect to pay $20.00 or more for your installation fee, which many may not realize is going to show up on their first bill. Make sure you understand how much this installation fee is going to be, and prepare to pay it entirely when the first bill arrives along with the monthly access rate.

A broadband modem is essential to Internet connectivity these days. You will be probably needing to use a modem from your Internet service provider, more so than ever if you plan on purchasing bundled broadband phone and Internet services. Because of this factor, your modem will more than likely be a rental. The cost of a modem rental will usually be added to the promotion so be prepared to add this to your monthly bill costs. Modem rental fees can be as high as $10.00 or sometimes even more per month.

A fee most common but not commonly analyzed is the franchise fee. Franchise fees can be just under ten cents or run as high $10.00 or more, depending on the location. This fee the ISP has no control over and is charged by local city or county government. The Internet provider is charged this for doing business within your area. Pretty much everyone on both sides would prefer to not to have to endure this charge but it exists regardless.

There is one bill cost that is all too common and known in the consumer world. State sales tax is charged on your bill per item in the bill, especially bundled cable Internet packages. So expect to pay more than one instance of sales tax per bill if you have a bundled package. Sales tax will appended to your Internet service, then on your phone, and finally on your cable TV package. What you pay in sales tax will depend on the state you live in and the kinds of services you buy from your Internet service provider.
